Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey in Blackstock
The spare under the planter by the side door is gone. Everyone in the family swears they did not take it, the planter has clearly been shifted, and you have no idea how long ago that happened.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey
In plain words
How much a lost key matters depends on what was lost with it. A ring that dropped into a lake on a canoe trip tells nobody where it fits, so the rekey is a tidy precaution. A ring taken with a wallet or bag that carried your address is a different story: someone now holds both the key and the door it opens, and the rekey comes first. The locksmith asks about this on the phone, says plainly which situation you are in, and schedules the visit accordingly. The work is the same either way, and so is the outcome: a key nobody else has.
How the visit goesThe keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot. The ring has a tag from the building with the unit number on it. Whoever finds it has an address and a key that fits.

How the visit goes
What was on the ring
The next few minutes are spent on the ring itself, because a key ring is a bundle of different problems. House keys point to cylinders that will be repinned. A garage remote points to an opener whose memory should be cleared. A building fob or parking card points to a property manager. A car key with a chip points to the automotive side of the trade. A tag with an address, a licence lost in the same bag, or a work lanyard in the same pocket changes how soon the household side should be settled. Listing it all before any tool comes out means nothing on the ring is forgotten when the van pulls away.
Setting a new combination pin by pin
On a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, with it on the bench, the plug is turned slightly and a follower is slid in behind it so the springs and top pins stay in the housing rather than scattering. The plug comes out and the old bottom pins are tipped away. The new key is cut first, then a pin whose length matches each cut is dropped into the corresponding chamber, checked flush with a gauge, and the loaded plug is guided back under the follower. The plug should turn with a light, even feel and no catch. If it drags on one chamber, that pin is sized again before anything goes back on the door.
Cylinders that turn more sweetly than before
A cylinder that has been apart, cleaned and repinned usually feels better than it did before the key went missing. Old grease, road salt and the grit that collects in a keyway over a decade came out with the plug, and a dry lubricant went in. Keys cut to code seat fully and lift each pin cleanly. If a door had a key that needed a wiggle or a shove, that is often gone. Follow your lock's own maintenance guidance to keep it that way: many cylinders take a puff of graphite or PTFE into the keyway now and then, some a specified liquid lubricant instead; general household oils and sprays collect dust and gum the pins.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Outbuildings, gates and padlocks
Sheds, gates and detached garages often carry padlocks or light cylinders. Bringing them onto the house key may mean a new padlock of a matching keyway, quoted as a part.
2Time and day of the call
A weekday afternoon and a late evening or holiday call cost the same amount for a lost-key rekey. When a stolen wallet makes the visit urgent, the locksmith still confirms the exact figure on site, once the cylinders and keys needed have been looked at.
3Getting to each cylinder
Doors spread across a large lot, a suite up several flights behind a locked lobby, or a gated property with a padlock at the road add walking and waiting time that the quote allows for.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
Can I just have another key cut instead?
You can, and it solves being without a key. It leaves the lost one working, though, which is the half of the problem that keeps people awake. Rekeying takes about as much effort as a trip to a hardware store counter and ends with a new key in your hand and the old one retired. If the key was mislaid somewhere it will never be found and named nothing, a plain copy is a fair choice.
When is replacing a lock better than rekeying it?
When the hardware itself is the weak point: a plug worn oval, a cylinder eaten by salt from a driveway-facing door, a light knob lock on an exterior door, a keyway with no blanks left in supply, or when you want a different style, a heavier deadbolt or a keypad. In those cases a new lock keyed to match the rest of the house is fitted in the same visit. Everything else is rekeyed.
What if my front and back doors are different brands?
Different brands often mean different keyways, so the same key blank will not enter both. The locksmith has two routes: replace the cylinder in one lock with a compatible one so both doors take the same key, or rekey each to its own new combination and give you two keys. Which suits you depends on the hardware and how much you want a single ring. Both are decided with you on the doorstep.

For a household in Blackstock the common requests are a rekey after moving in, a lockout, a deadbolt that grinds, and a lock that finally needs replacing. For a business they are storefront hardware, staff key control and exit devices. Both lists, and a few less common jobs, are laid out here.
